GreaterLagosCountdown2025: Burna Boy’s abrupt stage exit sparks fan backlash

The FrontierThe FrontierJanuary 1, 2025 5541 Minutes read0

•Burna Boy

Grammy-winning artiste Burna Boy has come under fire after abruptly leaving the stage during his performance at the Greater Lagos Countdown 2025.

The drama unfolded when a fan breached security and rushed toward the singer, prompting Burna Boy to halt his performance and exit, leaving the audience in shock, reports Vanguard.

A viral video of the incident has sparked a wave of reactions online, with fans and critics expressing mixed views.

While some argued that Burna Boy’s response was a necessary move to ensure his safety, others slammed the artiste for what they described as arrogance and disrespect toward his Nigerian audience.

One fan, @Kehny13, questioned the reaction, “Leaving the stage because a fan approached him doesn’t make sense. Even Cristiano Ronaldo protects fans who run onto the pitch. Would he do this in Europe or America?”

Another user, @itzbasito, accused Burna Boy of treating his Nigerian fans differently. “Burna Boy performs in Nigeria like he’s doing us a favour. He only kicks fans off the stage here, but treats his overseas fans with more respect.”

@Shxkxbabu said, “A white girl could run up to him in Switzerland, and he’d tell his bouncers to let her be. But in Nigeria, he storms off. Why the double standard?”

@TheAdeSzn commented, “Leaving the show after being honored by Governor Sanwo-Olu was disrespectful. Respect begats respect. He could’ve finished the performance.”

Meanwhile, some fans defended the artiste, emphasising his right to prioritise safety.

“Dave Chappelle once ended a show after spotting a fan using their phone. Burna Boy’s flow was disrupted after being rushed. Fans outside Nigeria rarely behave like this,” @Arhcent wrote.

Similarly, @LoganSaman50828 said, “Why don’t people listen? He’s repeatedly said not to jump on stage. Lucky it didn’t escalate further.”

@TiDiane03, said the incident highlighted the need for better crowd behaviour. “This nonsense wouldn’t happen abroad. May Burna Boy continue teaching us lessons until people learn how to behave at shows.”
