House of Reps to create constitutional role for traditional rulers – House Leader Doguwa

The FrontierThe FrontierAugust 26, 2025 1041 Minutes read0

•House of Representatives

The member representing Tudun Wada/Doguwa federal constituency in the House of Representatives, Alhassan Ado Doguwa, today said the House will create specific roles for traditional rulers in the ongoing 1999 constitutional reform.

Traditional rulers in Nigeria do not have definite role in the constitution, reports Daily Trust.

But speaking at the 2025 International Hausa Day celebration in Daura, Katsina State, the lawmaker said already there is a request to that effect before the constitutional reform committee.

Doguwa, who also holds the title of Sardaunan Kasar Hausa Mai Tuta, said, “Considering the crucial role of traditional rulers in the country, as members of the House of Representatives we are already considering that provision.

“Traditional rulers even before colonial rulers have been very crucial in ensuring peace, security and local administration. So, we need to provide them with their right position in the constitution,” he added.

Doguwa also thanked the organisers of the event saying it will further unite the Hausa speakers all over the world.

The palace of the Emir of Daura in the ancient city of Daura in Katsina state is hosting the 2025 International Hausa Day celebration.

The day, first celebrated on social social media in 2015, has now grown into a full celebration across the world every August 26, although the United Nations is yet to officially recognise the day.

Daura, the hometown of former Nigeria’s President, late Muhammadu Buhari, is strategically selected to host this year’s celebration due to its historical status as cradle of Hausa people and language and the mother of the modern day Hausa states.
