Illegal clinic shut down in Abuja after patient dies from surgery

The FrontierThe FrontierFebruary 4, 2025 2791 Minutes read0

Authorities have sealed an illegal clinic in the Kapwa, Gaube Community of Kuje Area Council following the death of a patient after a hernia operation.

The Private Health Establishments Registration and Monitoring Committee (PHERMC) shut down Dada’s Clinic and Maternity Ltd after it was found operating without registration and conducting medical procedures in unsafe conditions, reports Nigerian Tribune.

Situated along the main road leading to the community, the facility was discovered to be a rented apartment lacking essential healthcare infrastructure. An inspection team, led by the Director of Medical and Diagnostics Department and acting on the orders of Dr. Adedolapo Fasawe, Mandate Secretary of the Health and Environment Secretariat, conducted the raid after receiving reports of substandard medical practices.

During the inspection, officials found three patients admitted at the facility, who were immediately transferred to Kuje General Hospital for proper medical care.

Further investigation revealed the clinic was in a dilapidated state, with no proper windows, doors, or toilets, and an unsanitary extension being used as a medical space.

The operator, identified as Mr. Sabiu, has been detained and handed over to the police for further investigation.

Public outrage erupted after a community elder died following a hernia surgery at the clinic. Reports also indicated that several patients barely survived procedures and had to seek emergency care elsewhere.

Reacting to the incident, FCT Minister Nyesom Wike condemned the existence of illegal healthcare facilities in Abuja, emphasizing the government’s firm stance against unregistered clinics.

“We cannot allow illegal facilities to put residents’ lives at risk. Every healthcare center must be properly accredited,” Wike stated.

He further vowed to shut down such establishments to safeguard public health.
