Injuries, destructions confirmed in Ogun tanker explosion

•Tanker explosion

The Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency has confirmed that a woman sustained injuries while three vehicles were destroyed in the tanker fire that occurred along the Abeokuta–Sagamu Expressway today.

It was earlier reported that the fire began at about 1 a.m. after a 33,000-litre tanker overturned due to excessive speeding.

The fire was said to have spread and gutted two other vehicles, which were destroyed in the flames, reports The PUNCH.

The spokesperson for TRACE, Babatunde Akinbiyi, initially disclosed that the casualties could not be ascertained at the time of the incident.

Akinbiyi had earlier said, “The case of an inferno caused by a 30,000-litre fuel-laden tanker which fell on its side and spilled its contents around 0100hrs today, along the Abeokuta–Kobape–Siun–Sagamu Interchange stretch of the PMB Expressway, due to excessive speed and loss of control, has been reported.

“The effect of the unfortunate incident also extended to the burning of a truck and a tow vehicle along the roadside, as well as the destruction of a PHCN cable supplying electricity to Mowe and environs.

“Though the casualty figures cannot be ascertained presently, rescue and emergency services made up of TRACE, Ogun State and Nestlé PLC Fire Service, FRSC, and the Police are still on the ground to restore normalcy and orderliness after quenching the fire and carrying out the decantation process.”

In a follow-up conversation with Akinbiyi on Friday, he disclosed that the fire spread to a shanty along the expressway and caught up with a woman, who sustained minor injuries.

Similarly, electric poles and solar light poles along the expressway were also destroyed by the fire.

He said, “The damages have been ascertained. Nobody died in the fire. A woman who was sitting in a shanty along the road sustained minor injuries after the fire spread to the shanty.

“Also, three vehicles, including the tanker, a towing vehicle, and a truck, were affected.”

Akinbiyi clarified that no occupants of the vehicles were caught in the inferno.

While the occupants of these vehicles were fortunate to escape unhurt, tanker fire incidents of this nature are sometimes accompanied by tragic consequences.

It was earlier reported in October 2024 that a tanker fire along the Ibafo section of the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway claimed one life and destroyed multiple vehicles and goods.

Similarly, in July 2025, a petrol tanker explosion in Ibadan after brake failure was reported, affecting nearby vehicles, though casualties were not widely confirmed.
