•Nigerian Senate
After minutes of failed attempts at voting electronically using the installed digital voting devices at the seat of each lawmaker, the Senate, today, opted for an open ballot on the issue of the creation of state police.
Recall, the Senate had yesterday reconvened in an emergency plenary seeking to deliberate on an executive bill to create state police across the 36 states of the federation, reports Daily Independent.
The executive bill forwarded to the red chamber by President Bola Tinubu had sought the approval of the Senate to modify the nation’s security architecture following persistent insecurity and loss of lives and properties in parts of the country.
Earlier, the House of Representatives had passed the bill for the creation of the system, before the executive sought the approval of the National Assembly to amend the constitution to capture the recommendations of the state police bill.
