92 year-old man seeks IGP’s investigation on death of son in Police detention

The FrontierThe FrontierJuly 22, 2025 1004 Minutes read0

•IGP Kayode Egbetokun

A nonagenarian, Pa Festus Arhagba has appealed to the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, to order a discrete investigation to unravel the circumstances surrounding the mysterious death of his son, Mr. Kingsley Arhagba Onoriode, while under investigation by FID-IRT-FHQ Department, Old Abattoir, off Guzape junction, Abuja, but in the custody of the Nigerian police, Ajeromi, Lagos State Command.

Pa Festus, believes that his son, Kingsley, did not die a natural death, alleging there was more to his sudden death while under police custody than meets the eye, reports Daily Independent.

He therefore urged the IGP to order a thorough investigation into the death to avert the possibility of losing another of his son, who is still being questioned by the police over an allegation of kidnapping.

Meanwhile, the younger brother of the deceased, Mr. Kenneth Arhagba, has opened up on how he was detained by the police based on a petition alleging that he was making plans to kidnap his ex-girlfriend, and her lover.

It was gathered that Kenneth’s ordeal started on June 26, 2025, when about five (5) policemen accosted and arrested him without informing him of his offence and dragged him to Ajeromi Police Station, Lagos State, where he was detained and later taken to Marine Police Station, Awolowo Road, Ikoyi Lagos State.

From there, Kenneth was brought to FID-IRT-FHQ Department, Old Abattoir, off Guzape junction, Abuja, where he was informed of the petition written against him by one Chidi Mitchell Onyiah.

According to Kenneth, while in detention, one of the IPOs, informed him that, he has been given instructions not to allow him speak or see anybody and that he is going to deal with him and that nothing will happen even if he dies in their custody.

He said that all efforts and pleadings to the IPO to allow him speak with his relatives and to inform them of his whereabouts proved abortive.

Kenneth stated further that, on June 30, 2025, while still in detention at FID-IRT-FHQ Department, he was informed that his elder brother, Kingsley Arhagba Onoriode, who was also detained at Ajeromi Police Station on the same allegation of making plans to kidnap Mary James and Chidi Onyiah, died in detention under mysterious circumstances and as a ploy to cover up for the death of his elder brother Kingsley, the policemen at Ajeromi Police Station, it was alleged, quickly took his dead body to Ajeromi General Hospital and dumped it there.

That despite the fact that his elder brother died inside Ajeromi police station under detention, the FID-IRT-FHQ Department did not release him till on July 1 when he was granted bail.

According to Kenneth, when he returned back to Lagos, he was informed by his aged parents that one ASP from FID-IRT-FHQ Department, Abuja called his late brother Kingsley on June 30, 2025, and informed him that, Kenneth was detained at Ajeromi Police Station and that the elder brother should bring food and medicines for him.

That when the elder brother got there, he was arrested and detained by the Police and later died in the custody of the police.

“On the 30th Day of June 2025, when the ASP from FID-IRT-FHQ Department, Abuja, called my elder brother and my parents to bring food and medicines for me at Ajeromi Police station, I was detained at FID-IRT-FHQ Department, Abuja and not in Ajeromi Police station Lagos. Why should the police call my parents and elder brother and ask him to bring food and medicines for me at Ajeromi Police station, when I was still under detention at FID-IRT-FHQ Department, Abuja? The police were the one that arrested me and took me to Abuja, where I was detained. Yet, the same police asked my elder brother to bring food for me at Ajeromi Police station. What was their motive?” Kenneth asked.

We are calling on the IGP to investigate the ASP with phone number 08085716607, and the IPO with phone number 09044274789 both of FID-IRT-FHQ Deparment, Old Abattoir off Guzape Junction, Abuja, the lady with phone number 07064852727, and other officers at Ajeromi Police station, to find out what killed my elder brother Mr. Kingsley Arhagba.

He further said that since he came back from Lagos, he has visited Ajeromi Police station several times, but he has been asked to go to FID-IRT-FHQ Department Abuja or to go and meet the IGP.

This is why the family is now calling on the IGP to investigate the FID-IRT-FHQ Department, Abuja and the DPO of Ajeromi Police station to find out what killed their son, Mr. Kingsley Arhagba Onoriode who died mysteriously under detention in Ajeromi police station.

Pa Festus Arhagba stated that, despite the fact that he is yet to bury his late son Kingsley Arhagba who died in the custody of the Nigerian Police, on July 8, 2025, one Prince Yusuf with phone number 07036993880 and 07043304448, called his only surviving son, Kenneh and asked him to report back at FID-IRT-FHQ, Abuja on July 17, 2025, while still grieving the loss of his eldest son Mr. Kingsley Arhagba Onoriode.

According to Pa Festus Arhagba, “Do they want to kill Kenneth the way they killed Kingsley? They killed Kingsley and rushed to dump his corpse at Ajeromi Police Station, do they want to do the same to Kenneth? The death of Kingsley has caused me serious agony, emotional and grievous psychological trauma”.

Kenneth concluded that the family has contacted an Abuja based Human Rights Lawyer, Ojonimi S. Apeh, Esq, who has assured the family that he would do everything under the law to see that the family gets justice.

When contacted by our correspondent on the phone, Ojonimi said that a petition has been submitted to the IGP and he is waiting for the response from the IGP office before he takes the next line of action.
