A 300-level student of the Department of Computer Science at Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University, Lapai, Niger State, identified as Kelvin Danlami, has reportedly committed suicide after losing N600,000 through betting.

Sources disclosed that the money had been entrusted to the deceased but he allegedly used it for gambling, reports Daily Trust.

The body of the deceased was discovered hanging from the ceiling of his room by one of his neighbours, who subsequently alerted the authorities.

One of the students, who spoke with our correspondent, said, “It is true that one of our fellow students committed suicide after mismanaging the money entrusted in him for house rent due to gambling”.

The spokesperson of the Niger State Police Command, SP Wasiu Abiodun, confirmed the incident to our correspondent.

According to him, “On 19/1/26 at about 10.30am, information received indicated that in the early hours of the day, one Kelvin danlami, a student of IBBL was found to have hanged himself in his room with a cloth tied to the ceiling fan.

“One of the student neighbors who discovered the situation raised an alarm, and the victim was rushed to Gen hospital Lapai, where he was confirmed dead. The police operatives attached to Lapai Div visited the scene, conducted preliminary investigation and the family of the deceased was contacted. However, further investigation is ongoing to ascertain the reason for such action”.

Aliyu Abubakar, the General Secretary of the Students Union Government (SUG) of the institution, also confirmed the incident, describing it as tragic.
