Constituents of Kogi Central Senatorial District have commenced the recall process of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, expressing dissatisfaction with her performance and representation.
The exercise, which began in Okehi Local Government Area today, attracted a significant turnout of voters queuing up to support the recall petition, reports The Guardian.
Reports suggest the process has already started in some polling units.
Local sources indicate that the recall effort transcends party lines, driven by mounting frustration over the senator’s perceived inability to address critical issues such as poverty, infrastructure, and education within the district.
The recall process, scheduled to last two days, will take place across all polling units in the five local government areas of Kogi Central. During the exercise, registered voters will sign a petition calling for Akpoti-Uduaghan’s removal from office.
Observers say the move reflects growing impatience among the electorate, who feel that their expectations have not been met since Akpoti-Uduaghan’s assumption of office. Some community leaders have expressed concerns about the senator’s approach to addressing local challenges, describing it as inadequate and unresponsive.
Efforts to reach Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan for comments were unsuccessful as calls and messages to her media team were not returned at the time of filing this report.
This recall process follows heightened political tension between the senator and Senate President Godswill Akpabio, amid controversies surrounding seating arrangements and alleged misconduct on the Senate floor.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is expected to verify the signatures collected during the exercise before proceeding with further recall procedures, as stipulated by Nigeria’s electoral laws.
