Labour Party reboots as Nenadi Usman-led National Working Committee takes charge

The Labour Party (LP) yesterday showcased a fresh phase of consolidation and political positioning as its newly inaugurated National Working Committee (NWC), led by Nenadi Usman, convened its first meeting following the party’s national convention.

The meeting, held in Abuja, drew the presence of key party leaders, including Abia State Governor Alex Otti, who expressed optimism that the new leadership would stabilise and reposition the party ahead of crucial political activities, reports The Guardian.

Otti described the inaugural session as orderly and well-attended, noting that the majority of NWC members were physically present—an indication, he said, of renewed commitment within the party’s ranks.

“You have been found worthy to lead at this critical time. The responsibility before you is enormous, but there is also a clear opportunity to build on what has already been achieved,” he told the new leadership.

He stressed that the Nenadi Usman-led team possesses the capacity to deepen internal reforms, strengthen party structures, and effectively manage upcoming processes, including primaries and elections.

The governor also pointed to growing signs of reconciliation within the party, revealing that previously estranged stakeholders, including former state chairmen, participated actively in the recent convention — an indication that unity efforts are gaining traction.

“The process of bringing everyone together is ongoing, and we are beginning to see encouraging results,” he said.

Looking ahead to the 2027 general elections, Otti maintained that the Labour Party is already positioning itself as a credible alternative, with open doors for aspirants across all levels.

“Nigeria’s political space is highly competitive. Our task is to strengthen our internal mechanisms and provide Nigerians with a platform they can truly believe in,” he stated.

He also pushed back against claims that the party is being influenced by the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), dismissing such assertions as unfounded.

“We are not teleguided by anyone. The Labour Party remains independent and focused on its own vision,” he said.

While stopping short of a formal declaration, Otti hinted that the party could field a formidable presidential candidate to challenge Bola Tinubu in 2027, underscoring LP’s ambition to play a central role in the next electoral cycle.

The inaugural NWC meeting is widely seen as a defining step in the party’s effort to reset its internal dynamics and project stability, as it navigates post-convention realignments and prepares for the road to 2027.
