The Labour Party (LP) yesterday formally unveiled its 2027 vice presidential candidate, Hajia Bintu Konto, as the party’s national leadership expressed firm confidence in its presidential ticket ahead of the general election.

The interactive session, held at the party’s national secretariat in Abuja, was attended by members of the National Working Committee and the party’s presidential candidate, Dr. Chibuzo Sunday Okereke, reports Daily Trust.

The National Chairman of the party, Senator Nenadi Usman, said Konto’s nomination reflected the party’s unwavering commitment to equity, inclusion, and social justice.

Usman noted that selecting a female running mate was consistent with the party’s “Mama, Papa, Pikin” philosophy, adding that it demonstrated the Labour Party’s genuine belief in equal opportunity.

She described Konto as a leader with “intimidating credentials” and extensive humanitarian experience, capable of driving meaningful governance if elected alongside Okereke.

The party chairman also praised the Governor of Abia State, Dr. Alex Otti, describing his administration as a practical model of what Labour Party governance can achieve. She specifically cited the state’s social welfare legislation for senior citizens as tangible evidence of people-oriented leadership.

Usman urged Nigerians to support the party in future elections, emphasizing that developments in Abia State demonstrate the capacity of Labour Party administrations to deliver true democratic dividends.

In his remarks, Okereke expressed delight at pairing with Konto, whom he described as an experienced and dependable partner. He stressed that women remain central to national development, adding that excluding them from governance is like “attempting to clap with one hand.”

Okereke further commended Konto’s humanitarian work and public health advocacy, noting that her background would complement his vision for national renewal.

Responding, Konto expressed gratitude to the party leadership for the confidence reposed in her and pledged to dedicate herself to national service if elected.

She recalled her humanitarian interventions during the Boko Haram insurgency in northern Nigeria, noting that she continued to support affected communities despite losing her husband during the conflict.

Konto stated that her practical experience working with vulnerable communities would directly inform her approach to tackling insecurity and implementing people-centered policies. She added that her decision to join the Labour Party was grounded in her belief that the party possesses the vision and roadmap required to address Nigeria’s leadership challenges.

The unveiling comes as political parties step up preparations and strategic positioning ahead of the 2027 general election.
