Lagos-Calabar road project: Afenifere demands Tinubu’s impeachment

A faction of the pan-Yoruba socio-political group, Afenifere, is seeking immediate impeachment proceedings against President Bola Tinubu over the conflict of interest that trailed the award of Lagos-Calabar coastal road project contract.

Speaking today, leader of the group, Oba Oladipo Olaitan, berated the president for awarding the contract to Gilbert Chagoury, whom he claimed was his close partner, while commissioning the 30-kilometre, Phase 1, Section 1 of the coastal highway project, reports Saturday Guardian.

He fumed that the road was awarded without due process, which would have paved way for competitive bidding and appeared to be tailored to benefit the privately owned Eko Atlantic City.

“All President Tinubu is doing is building a road to his own Atlantic City.

“That road was not advertised for public bidding. It is a national shame. If we had a truly independent and vibrant National Assembly, they would have begun impeachment proceedings immediately,” he said.

Oba Oladipo Olaitan wondered why anyone would commission a small portion of the highway, adding that the government may not complete the full stretch of the coastal road once the portion leading to Atlantic City is completed.

The Afenifere faction leader called on the National Assembly to commence the impeachment process with immediate effect if they are not equally complicit.

Recall the president had described the Chagoury-led Hitech Construction Company as a “symbol of courage and commitment” over his efforts to ensure that the Lagos-Calabar highway project sees the light of day.

“To the contractors and my partner in daring, it was tough for us… We came together to tame the Atlantic,” Tinubu said.
