Lagos opens registration for 2026 Model College screening test •NGO steps in to fund NECO candidates

The FrontierThe FrontierMarch 4, 2026 1192 Minutes read0

The Lagos State Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education has officially kicked off online registration for the 2026 Screening Test into Model Colleges and Upgraded Junior Secondary Schools with boarding facilities, ahead of the 2026/2027 academic session.

The exercise, coordinated by the Lagos State Examinations Board, began on Monday, January 19, 2026, and will remain open until Friday, May 15, 2026, giving parents, guardians, and school administrators several weeks to complete the process, reports Daily Independent.

According to the Board’s Registrar, Mr. Adebayo Orunsolu, the screening is open to Primary Six pupils from both public and private primary schools across the state. He urged parents, guardians, school owners, and head teachers to complete the registration process online through the Board’s official portal.

A non-refundable registration fee of ₦10,000 has been fixed for all applicants. Importantly, candidates of Lagos State origin are required to upload a valid Lagos State Indigeneship Certificate as part of their registration documentation.

The Screening Test will be conducted using the Computer-Based Test (CBT) format and is tentatively scheduled to hold from Wednesday, May 27 to Friday, May 29, 2026, at designated centres across Lagos State.

Orunsolu called on all stakeholders to adhere strictly to the published guidelines, reaffirming the State Government’s commitment to “maintaining transparency, merit, and high standards in the admission process” into the State’s Model Colleges and upgraded junior secondary schools.

In a separate but related development, students in Education District III have received a timely financial boost for their upcoming National Examinations Council (NECO) examinations, following an intervention by a non-governmental organisation, 100 Smiles.

At a presentation ceremony held at the District Headquarters in Falomo, Ikoyi, ten Senior Secondary School students were presented with cash assistance to cover their NECO registration fees ensuring that financial hardship would not stand between them and a critical academic milestone.

The Tutor-General and Permanent Secretary of Education District III, Mr. Olusegun Olawale Osinaike, who facilitated the presentation, praised the gesture as “a laudable intervention” that complements ongoing government efforts in the education sector.

“No child should be denied access to quality education due to financial constraints,” Osinaike stressed, describing education as “the bedrock of meaningful development.” He urged the beneficiaries to remain “disciplined, focused, and determined,” calling education “a priceless asset that no one can take away.”

The founder of 100 Smiles, Mr. Okusanya Rilwan Olumade, explained that the initiative was designed to “restore confidence in students, put smiles on their faces, and help them understand their words, worth, and world.”

Olumade disclosed that beneficiaries were carefully selected from public secondary schools within the district based on character, behaviour, and demonstrated financial need ensuring that the support reached those who truly needed it most.

The Lagos State Examinations Board has urged all eligible candidates to begin their registration process early to avoid last-minute complications ahead of the May 15 deadline.
