The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), University of Medical Sciences, Ondo (UNIMED) chapter has declared a total, and indefinite strike over the failure of the Ondo State government to fully implement the 2025 Federal Government of Nigeria-ASUU agreement and pay accrued arrears from January 1, 2026.
The decision was taken at the union’s congress meeting held yesterday, Thursday, August 27, 2026, following the expiration of a 14-day ultimatum issued to the university administration and the state government to implement the agreement at the University of Medical Sciences, Ondo, reports Channels TV.
In a statement signed by the Chairperson of ASUU-UNIMEDO, Comrade Abraham O. Oladebeye, and Secretary, Comrade Adeniran O. Akinola, the union said it reviewed the outcome of the ultimatum and observed that the agreement had not been implemented.
The union consequently directed all its members to withdraw from all statutory academic functions and services with immediate effect from 11:25 am yesterday, effectively grounding academic activities at the institution indefinitely.
Under the directive, lecturers are to withdraw from lectures and classes, all forms of continuous assessment and examinations, as well as seminars at undergraduate, conversion and postgraduate levels.
The strike also covers departmental, faculty, committee and Senate meetings, including statutory and emergency meetings, whether conducted physically or virtually.
ASUU-UNIMEDO further directed its members to suspend supervision of students’ research projects, Information Technology (IT) supervision and fieldwork, among other academic responsibilities.
The union said the action would continue until the 2025 agreement was fully implemented at the university and the accrued arrears from January 1, 2026, were paid.
