•Yusuf Mahmuda with his cut finger

The Kano State Police Command has arrested five suspects, including a young man who cut off his own finger after being promised ₦80 million in an alleged occult arrangement.

‎Police spokesman, CSP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, said the incident happened on August 29, 2026, when 27‑year‑old Yusuf Mahmuda of Rano went to the police station to lodge a complaint.

‎Kiyawa said the person told officers that someone had asked him to procure a living human finger in exchange for ₦80 million, reports Daily Trust.

‎He said after failing to find one, Yusuf allegedly took a knife and severed his own left‑hand finger, which he delivered to the person who made the demand.

He later reported to the police that he had not received the promised money.

‎Kiyawa explained that investigations led to the arrest of four other suspects alongside Yusuf.

They include Abdurrahman Abbas, 45, of Kwassangami in Gezawa Local Government Area; Abubakar Iliyasu, 35, of Zangon Dakata in Kano city; Shu’aibu Awale, 55, of Daganawa in Bunkure Local Government Area; and Ishaka Isa, 26, of Rano.

‎The PPRO said the police recovered the severed finger, the knife used in the act, and apprehended the alleged mastermind.

‎He added that yesterday, all five suspects were arraigned before the Sharia Court in Jogana, Gezawa Local Government Area, on charges of criminal conspiracy and attempted witchcraft.
