Marketers suspend petrol loading at Dangote Refinery as price uncertainty grows

The Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN) says its members have temporarily suspended the loading of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), also known as petrol, from the Dangote Refinery following the refinery’s halt in petrol loading operations.

The development was disclosed by the Western Zone Chairman of IPMAN, Oyewole Akanni, in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

According to Akanni, the suspension has forced marketers to source petrol from private depots, where prices have risen significantly, creating uncertainty across the downstream sector.

He said fluctuations in depot prices have prompted many marketers to delay fresh purchases, while some filling stations have temporarily shut down after exhausting their existing stock.

Akanni explained that the refinery reportedly suspended petrol loading operations about four days ago without prior notice to marketers or an official explanation.

He noted that trucks belonging to marketers, including four scheduled for his stations, have remained at the refinery awaiting loading.

The IPMAN official said only a limited number of marketers are currently lifting products from private depots because of uncertainty over future pricing.

Despite the situation, Akanni maintained that there is no fuel shortage in the country and advised motorists against panic buying.

He, however, warned that pump prices could rise if the current situation persists.

Akanni also stated that the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Limited could be affected by the disruption, as it also sources petroleum products from the Dangote Refinery.

The development comes amid reports that some fuel importers are considering upward adjustments in depot prices, a move that could influence retail petrol prices if sustained.
