Governor Adeleke orders shutdown of steel mill, others over tax evasion

The FrontierThe FrontierAugust 16, 2024 2261 Minutes read0

•Osun State governor, Ademola Adeleke

The Osun State Government today said it has shut down Prism Steel Mill, Ikirun, and some business premises in Ede due to non-compliance and evasion of taxes.

A statement by the Information Officer, of Osun State Internal Revenue Service, Seun Ayeni, obtained in Osogbo, said a tax enforcement team led by the OIRS chairman, Mr. Adesola Adewumi, ordered that the steel company and other affected business premises be sealed.

Adewumi also said the affected business premises were nonchalant to the harmonised demand notice sent to them from the Internal Revenue Service.

The statement quoting Adewumi partly reads, “Prism Steel Rolling Mill and others have been served harmonised demand notice for quite some time for them to fulfil their statutory obligations and pay to the coffers of the state government. But they failed to help themselves.

“They refused to fulfil their responsibility to the state, which led to the sealing of their business premises.”

The OIRS chairman explained that the deadline for the payment was given to all businesses operating in the state to pay their bills, expressing dissatisfaction with their refusal to comply.

“We are lucky to have this type of governor, Senator Ademola Adeleke in Osun State who doesn’t want any business to be sealed, giving grace till 31st of July this year to business owners to do the needful,” he said.

He urged businesses in the state to rise up to their responsibilities and remit their taxes as and when due.

It was earlier reported that Osun state Internal Revenue Service had clampdown on the tax evading business premises in the state and would begin after the expiration of a period given to them to pay up.
