Minister hails former Governor Osoba at 87, describes him as pillar of Nigeria’s democracy, APC

Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare, Dr Isiaq Adekunle Salako, has described former Ogun State governor, Chief Olusegun Osoba, as one of the living consciences of Nigeria’s democracy and a leading pillar of the All Progressives Congress (APC). Demographics

Salako spoke yesterday at Osoba’s residence in Ibara GRA, Abeokuta, after joining other dignitaries to celebrate the former governor’s 87th birthday and offer prayers for his continued good health, reports The Nation.

He said Osoba made lasting contributions to Nigeria’s democratic development, first as a distinguished journalist and later as governor of Ogun State and a pro-democracy campaigner.

According to the minister, Osoba contributed significantly to nation-building through journalism before entering politics, where he was elected governor in 1992 and again in 1999.

Salako also commended Osoba’s role in the pro-democracy struggle under the National Democratic Coalition (NADECO), describing him as one of the architects of the democratic system Nigeria enjoys today. Demographics

“Chief Olusegun Osoba is more or less one of the living consciences of the democracy we are currently enjoying in Nigeria,” he said.

He added that despite decades in public service, Osoba remains a respected voice in national politics and one of the APC’s strongest figures in Ogun State and across the country.

Describing himself as one of the younger politicians following Osoba’s example, Salako thanked God for preserving the elder statesman and celebrated his contributions to public service.

The minister also expressed optimism about Ogun State’s political future, saying he hoped Osoba would witness the emergence of Senator Solomon Olamilekan Adeola, popularly known as Yayi, as governor in 2027.

He prayed that Osoba would remain in good health to witness Senator Adeola’s inauguration on 29 May 2027, see him complete both terms in office and witness the transition to a succeeding administration.

“I congratulate him for the life he has lived, the accomplishments he has made, and I pray that Almighty God will grant him longer life, good health and more strength for continued service to humanity, particularly Ogun State,” Salako said.
