National grid collapse: Power restored to 90 per cent substations

The FrontierThe FrontierOctober 15, 2024 2881 Minutes read0

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has announced that the national grid has successfully restored about 90 per cent of bulk power supply across its substations nationwide, following a system collapse that plunged the country into a blackout.

TCN spokesperson Ndidi Mbah disclosed this information in a statement today.

She explained that bulk power supply has been restored to the Abuja axis and other major distribution load centres throughout the country.

According to Mbah, “The Transmission Company of Nigeria hereby states that the national grid experienced a partial disturbance on Monday, 14th October 2024, at about 6:48 PM.

“Efforts to fully recover the grid are still ongoing.” She noted that while recovery efforts began immediately—with the Azura power station providing the initial blackstart—there was a setback encountered at approximately 10:24am on Tuesday.

Despite this minor setback, Mbah confirmed that TCN has made significant progress in the recovery process, ensuring that about 90 per cent of its substations nationwide now have bulk power availability.

“Supply has been restored to the Abuja axis and other major distribution load centres nationwide,” she added.

Mbah clarified that the partial disturbance did not impact the Ibom Gas generating station, which had been isolated from the grid.

This station continued to supply electricity to southern areas, including Eket, Ekim, Uyo, and the Itu 132kV transmission substations during the outage.

An investigation into the cause of the incident will commence as soon as the grid is fully restored.

Although reports early today indicated that electricity had been restored in some parts of Abuja, many areas in the nation’s capital were still experiencing blackouts as of the latest updates.
