National Police Day: Tinubu underscores intelligence gathering as IGP Disu salutes fallen heroes

President Bola Tinubu has promised to deepen investment in police training, intelligence gathering, and modern law enforcement systems.

He also stated that for Nigeria to make any meaningful progress, there must be a secure social environment, reports The Guardian.

The president maintained that the steps form part of a broader plan to transform the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) into a world-class institution.

According to him, the Nigerian state owes a permanent moral duty to empower its security agencies, as the nation’s peace is only as secure as the men and women who keep vigil over its citizens.

The president, represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima at the second edition of the National Police Day in Abuja yesterday, maintained that no nation could make meaningful progress without a secure social environment.

He declared that the federal government would deepen investments in training, intelligence gathering and modern policing infrastructure as part of his administration’s ongoing reform agenda.

“We will continue to support these reforms through sustained investment in training and capacity development, modern equipment and technology, improved intelligence and investigative capabilities, and better welfare and working conditions for police personnel.

“We are determined to build a Police Force that is well equipped, well trained, and well-motivated to confront the complex security challenges of our time,” the President stated.

In his remarks, the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Olatunji Disu, has paid glowing tributes to men and women of the Police Force, who laid their lives in the protection of others, with an assurance that the deceased families will always have the shoulder of the force to lean on.

The IGP also warned that erring officers and personnel would face disciplinary actions irrespective of their ranks or influence.

The Inspector General of Police reiterated that every life lost in service was a debt on the Police’s conscience.

He stated that every fallen officer must be seen as a call to do better, be better and to serve better.

Emphasising the need for collaboration and discipline, the Police boss called on traditional rulers, community leaders, civil society, and the media to see themselves as partners by forging continued collaboration.

Meanwhile, the Katsina State Governor, Dr Dikko Radda, has extolled the Nigerian Police Force for their relentless sacrifice and dedication to national security.

According to him, their effort deserves gratitude and respect from Nigerians.

Radda made his position known in a statement issued by one of his spokespersons, Ibrahim Mohammed, to celebrate the 2026 National Police Day.

The governor said, “Today, we celebrate those who put on the uniform and risk their lives to keep us safe. Our police officers deserve our gratitude and respect.”

He acknowledged the exceptional contributions of the police in ensuring the security of lives and properties in the state and other parts of the country.
