•Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University main gate

The Niger State Government has announced the immediate closure of Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University (IBBU), Lapai, following a disturbing spike in security threats that led to the loss of lives within the campus community.

In a statement, the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Abubakar Usman, the government said the decision became imperative in light of the growing insecurity in and around the institution.

Governor Umaru Bago approved the shutdown, which takes effect immediately and will remain in force until further notice, reports Channels TV.

“The safety and security of all citizens, particularly students and staff, is of utmost priority to the Niger State Government,” the statement read.

“We are deeply saddened by the unfortunate events, and immediate action is being taken to address the situation.”

The government appealed to students, staff, and the entire university community to remain calm, stay vigilant, and cooperate fully with security operatives during this period of uncertainty.

It also assured that steps are being taken to restore peace and normalcy, while investigations into the incidents are already underway. Those found to be responsible will face the full weight of the law.

“We remain resolute in our commitment to upholding law and order and to safeguarding the lives and property of all residents in Niger State,” the statement added.
