Nigerian girls breaking grounds despite challenges – Commissioner

Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development in Ogun State, Hon Motunrayo Adijat Adeleye, has said Nigerian girls have risen above myriad of obstacles to break barriers in all spheres of life.

However, Adeleye pointed out that the challenges confronting them including gender inequality, limited access to education, or the lingering menace of early child marriage and societal stereotypes are far from being over, reports Daily Trust.

She spoke in Abeokuta, Ogun State capital, at an event jointly organised her ministry, First Lady’s office and the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), to celebrate this year’s International Day of the Gild Child.

The event featured contest among participants drawn from eleven schools as various winners went home with cash prizes among others.

Addressing the gathering, Adeleye, a former member of State House of Assembly, said, “From excelling in education to making groundbreaking strides in science, arts, sports, and beyond, girls are proving their limitless potential.

“However, as we stand in admiration of their lofty achievements, we must also acknowledge that the fight is far from over—millions of girls still face violence, inequality, and lack access to quality education. But today, we are here to envision a new future for our girls—a future that is bold, inclusive, and full of promise.”

The commissioner said the state government has consistently demonstrated unwavering support for girls in State through empowerment of girls, sensitization campaigns, and encouraging them to speak out against Gender-Based Violence (GBV).

She reiterated that the government is training 1,000 girls in technical and vocational education in order to bridge the widening gender gap.

On her part, the First Lady, Mrs Bamidele Abiodun, said, “My vision for the girls of Ogun State is that they grow up in a world where their voices are heard and their potential is unlocked. This vision is in line with the Sustainable Development Goals, particularly SDG 3, which seeks to ensure healthy lives and well-being for all, and SDG 8, which promotes decent work and economic growth.”
