The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has ordered an investigation into the alleged assault on a lecturer of the University of Ibadan (UI), Dr. Mikail Abdussalam, at the Obafemi Awolowo Train Station in Moniya, Ibadan.
The corporation said it viewed the incident with serious concern, stressing that harassment, intimidation or any form of misconduct towards passengers or members of the public was unacceptable and contrary to its operational standards, reports The Nation.
In a statement by its Managing Director, Dr. Kayode Opeifa, the management said it had directed an immediate probe into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
According to him, any personnel found to have acted contrary to the corporation’s professional and public service code of conduct would face appropriate disciplinary measures in line with established regulations and the laws of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
Opeifa said he regretted the incident and apologised to the lecturer for the distress caused by the incident.
“The corporation sincerely regrets the unfortunate incident and extends its apologies to the lecturer for the distress caused,” he said.
The managing director added that the NRC remained committed to ensuring that passengers and visitors at its stations were treated with dignity, respect and professionalism at all times.
Opeifa also assured the public that steps were being taken to reinforce adherence to customer service standards across all railway facilities to prevent a recurrence of such incidents.
