Oyo kidnapping: Schools remain closed despite rescue of teachers, pupils

The FrontierThe FrontierJuly 16, 2026 451 Minutes read0

•The rescued victims

Academic activities have yet to resume in schools in the Esinele, Yawota and Ahoro-Esinele communities of Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State, despite the successful rescue of the 44 abducted teachers, students and pupils.

Although schools in other parts of the locality, including Ahoro Dada and Ikoyi-Ile, have reopened, the affected schools in Yawota and Ahoro-Esinele remain locked, reports The Nation.

This development comes despite the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) suspending the indefinite strike it had launched following the abduction of the victims.

The union had declared the strike to demand the safe rescue of the kidnapped teachers and pupils.

It was reported that while teachers in most local government areas complied with the directive to resume work after the strike was called off, their counterparts in Oriire initially stayed away from classrooms, insisting they would only return after the abductees had been rescued.

Although the victims have since regained their freedom, academic activities have resumed only in some schools within the local government area. Several of the rescued victims have also been discharged after receiving treatment at the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology Teaching Hospital, Ogbomoso.

Findings, however, indicate that Community Grammar School, Ahoro-Esinele, as well as the affected public and private schools in the Yawota community, remain closed.

Sources also disclosed that some of the rescued pupils who have been discharged from hospital are still at home under the care and close supervision of their parents as they continue their recovery.
