Pay or Die: Fear grips residents as terrorists demand N100 million from community

Suspected terrorists have reportedly demanded N100 million from residents of the Utono community in Ngaski Local Government Area of Kebbi State, sparking fear and heightened security in the area.

According to reports, the group delivered a letter to community leaders warning them to pay the money or face deadly consequences.

The letter allegedly stated, “This is not a joke. We are coming to preach. You must pay us N100 million. If you refuse, you will face the consequences and have no one to blame but yourselves. Even if you call soldiers, they cannot stop us.”

The threat comes amid rising insecurity in parts of Kebbi and neighbouring states, where armed groups have carried out attacks, kidnappings and extortion, especially in rural communities, reports The Guardian.

The group reportedly referenced a previous attack on Woro community in Kaima Local Government Area of Kwara State, where several people were killed after ignoring a similar warning.

Although the letter could not be independently verified, a community source who spoke anonymously said the message has caused panic among residents.

“People are scared. The mention of what happened in Woro has made the threat more frightening. Many families are already discussing safety plans in case anything happens,” the source said.

Confirming the development, the Chief Press Secretary to the Kebbi State Governor, Alhaji Ahmed Idris, said the state government has responded swiftly.

He disclosed that security personnel have been deployed in the affected area, with additional measures including air surveillance to prevent any possible attack.

A security source also confirmed that security presence has been reinforced in Utono and surrounding communities, as residents remain on high alert.
