PDP won’t allow one-party state — Governors’ Forum

The FrontierThe FrontierOctober 24, 2024 2492 Minutes read0

The Peoples Democratic Party Governors’ Forum (PDP-GF) has vowed to resist any attempt to foist a one-party state on Nigeria by the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

The chairman PDP-GF and Bauchi State governor, Bala Mohammed, stated this at a recent Forum of the party which was held at the Bauchi Governor’s Lodge, Abuja, reports Nigerian Tribune.

He said although the PDP is undergoing different challenges at the moment, it will not give room for agents of destabilisation to infiltrate the former ruling party.

He said the meeting was convened to bring all the organs together and chart a new course for the party first to win the upcoming governorship election in Ondo State as well as rescuing Nigeria from APC’s misrule in 2027.

“We would resist, with all our strength and capacity, any attempt to convert Nigeria into one-party state.

“We’ll make sure that all the dividing forces will not succeed within us.

“We’ll use our experiences and our unity, especially experiences we garnered since 1999, to make sure we provide Nigerians a very good platform with which to actualise their aspirations in 2027.

“This is a PDP meeting that is bringing every organ of the party so that we can chart a course and ensure that we win in Ondo.

“We’ll continue to win and rescue power from the maladministration of the APC.

“This meeting is a one-item agenda. It is not a caucus. It is not a Governors’ Forum meeting.

“It is a meeting of the PDP, PDP stakeholders with the governors and other organs of the party to discuss and chart a way forward in terms of unifying the party.

“The country is aware of what we experienced about a week ago where we had a spate of suspensions and counter-suspensions. But PDP is a wonderful party. We are able to surmount that problem. We are united today under the leadership of acting (national) chairman, Ambassador Iliya Damagum.

“And that is why we are here because the governors, the BoT who are the conscience of the party discussed matters that will make us succeed in the future and to avoid the kind of happening.

“We discussed issues that are germane but which are internal because the PDP magic is that it can always come back,” the Bauchi governor said.

Present at the meeting were Governors Caleb Muftwang, Ademola Adeleke, Sim Fubara of Plateau, Osun, Rivers, the acting national chairman, Ambassador Iliya Damagum; chairman BoT, Senator Adolphus Wabara; deputy national chairman (South), Ambassador Taofeek Arapaja and National Working Committee (NWC) members.

Reading the communique at the end of the meeting, Mohammed said, “Reiterating the need for unity in the face of efforts by detractors to divide the party, the meeting called on all members to shun divisive utterances that could undermine ongoing efforts at strengthening the party to effectively play its role as the country’s main opposition, preparatory to taking over in 2027.”
