The Bayelsa State Police Command has arrested a 68-year-old man and his 36-year-old son for alleged unlawful possession of four single-barrel guns.
In a statement, Musa Mohammed, a superintendent and the Bayelsa Police Command’s image maker, said operatives of the Anti-Vice Unit made the arrest on Monday, July, 2026, at about 10:30 a.m.
The suspects, identified as Tibi Friday, 68, and Oyabrade Tibi, 36, both from Futoro Gbene Community in Ekeremor Local Government Area, were arrested in a commercial tricycle during a routine stop-and-search operation on the Igbogene–Tombia Expressway in Yenagoa, the statement added.
Mohammed said a search of the tricycle revealed four single-barrel guns concealed inside a sack and covered with sticks.
He said the suspects told operatives they were travelling to Abua in Rivers State at the time of the arrest.
Mohammed said, “The case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department, SCID, Yenagoa, for discreet investigation to ascertain the source of the firearms and identify any other persons connected with the offence.”
Mohammed added that the command, under CP Iyamah Daniel Edebor, reaffirmed its commitment to tackling the proliferation of illegal firearms and other violent crimes in the state.
It also urged residents to continue providing timely and credible information to aid security efforts.
