Police warn against indiscriminate gunfire by armed security personnel during weddings, cultural events, other gatherings

The Commissioner of Police, Borno State Command, CP Naziru Abdulmajid, has expressed serious concern over the growing incidents of indiscriminate gunfire by some armed security personnel during weddings, cultural festivities, political gatherings, and other celebratory events across the state.

A statement by the State Command’s Public Relations Officer, ASP Nahum Daso, today, described the practice as reckless, unprofessional, and dangerous, reports Channels TV.

He emphasised that firearms are issued strictly for the protection of lives and property and must never be used for celebration or entertainment.

The statement noted that every bullet fired into the air eventually returns to the ground and can result in the death or injury of innocent persons, as well as property damage.

Consequently, the CP has directed all Area Commanders and Divisional Police Officers (DPOs) to immediately commence sustained stakeholder engagement and sensitisation campaigns within their areas of responsibility.

The engagements are to involve traditional rulers, religious leaders, community leaders, youth groups, Vigilante Security Outfits (VSOs), the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF), and other relevant stakeholders to educate the public on the dangers and legal consequences of celebratory gunfire.

The Commissioner further warned that any armed security personnel found engaging in the indiscriminate discharge of firearms or aiding such acts will be identified and subjected to appropriate disciplinary measures and other legal actions in accordance with the law.

The Borno State Police Command also called on members of the public to support this initiative by promptly reporting any person, including armed security personnel, found discharging firearms indiscriminately during ceremonies or public gatherings.

Such reports can be made to the nearest Police Station, Divisional Headquarters, or through the Command’s emergency lines: 08068075581, 08023473293.

The Command promised to keep the identity of informants confidential, adding that it remained committed to protecting lives and property, and urged all residents to celebrate responsibly and peacefully without engaging in any act capable of endangering the lives of others.
