Potential surprises at the 2026 FIFA World Cup

The FrontierThe FrontierApril 11, 2026 752 Minutes read0

A lot of countries have made history by reaching their first World Cup ever, or a first appearance in a long time. However, with more “minnows” making up the 48 teams now represented at the summer showpiece, there is the potential for some of these nations to create more history and reach the knockout stages, reports irelandbeforeyoudie.com.

For the likes of Haiti, Curacao, Cape Verde, Iraq, DR Congo, Uzbekistan, and Jordan, the fact that eight third place teams are rewarded with a ticket to the Round of 32 gives them extra incentive to progress out of the group stage.

Previous editions of the World Cup have witnessed seismic shocks. In 2002, Senegal beat defending champions France. 2022 saw Saudi Arabia beat Argentina 2-1, before Messi and co. went on to win the competition.

Although not an underdog story, who could forget Germany smashing Brazil 7-1 in their own back yard. There is always potential for shock results at the World Cup.

A New Winner – What Are The Chances?

Eight different nations have lifted the prestigious World Cup trophy. Brazil led the way with five triumphs. But with more jeopardy expected with the expanded format, what are the chances of a new name being written into the history books?

Perhaps, the biggest surprise has already happened in Italy failing to make a third consecutive World Cup tournament. They will definitely not have the chance to draw level with Brazil on five wins. But where could a new winner be found?

Most recently, Japan shocked a much-changed England team at Wembley to achieve their first ever win over England. Soccer World Cup 2026 betting odds do not give the Japanese the biggest chance of upsetting the odds.

But with a solid and consistent playing style and an impressive work ethic, there is certainly a chance. With home advantage to some extent, could Mexico take advantage of the local conditions and a passionate fanbase to cause a surprise?

The footballing powerhouses such as Spain, France, England, Brazil, Argentina, Portugal, and Germany lead the way in the markets.

However, if nations like Japan and Mexico, or other underdogs such as Norway, Morocco, and Croatia can put together a run of eight matches, it could be a competition to remember for one of them.

Venture Into The Unknown – New Challenges And Dynamics

Despite all the speculation and pre-tournament predictions, the 2026 FIFA World Cup will be a relatively new experience for all involved.

With matches spread across three countries spanning large distances, the varying climates, and the aforementioned new format, there will be new challenges and dynamics to contend with for coaching staff, players, and fans alike.

A surprise could be borne out of this venture into the unknown with the nation that adapts best to the changes potentially emerging victorious.

More often than not, quality speaks volumes at these major events. But every nation and individual player will enter the tournament with a point to prove. It is all to play for and shocks are certainly possible.
