Reps proposal of 31 new states ironic and comical — Senator Shehu Sani

•Shehu Sani

A former Senator representing Kaduna Central, Senator Shehu Sani, has criticised the proposal for the creation of additional 31 states in Nigeria.

The proposal was made yesterday by the House of Representatives Committee on the review of the 1999 Constitution, reports Channels TV.

Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives Benjamin Kalu who presided over plenary yesterday read a letter from the committee containing the proposed states.

Reacting to the development in a post on his X handle today, Senator Sani said it is not only ironic but also comical.

The former lawmaker questioned why new states are needed when most of the existing states depend on allocation from the federal government to survive.

“While many states are dependent on federal allocation for their survival, the House of Representatives proposal for 31 states is ironic and comical. Politicians just want to cave out mini colonies for themselves,” he said.
