Disu to take oath as IGP as Tinubu skips Senate route

President Bola Tinubu will tomorrow formally swear in IGP Tunji Disu as the substantive Inspector-General of Police at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

The oath-taking ceremony is scheduled to hold during the weekly meeting of the Federal Executive Council (FEC), reports The Guardian.

The President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, disclosed to State House correspondents.

Notably, Disu will not appear before the Senate for confirmation, marking a shift from previous practice.

His inauguration follows yesterday’s confirmation by the Nigeria Police Council, which met at the Council Chamber of the Presidential Villa under the chairmanship of President Tinubu.

The session was convened to formally ratify his appointment after the resignation of former IGP Kayode Egbetokun.

Disu had been serving in an acting capacity since last week and was decorated with the rank of Inspector-General shortly after his appointment. Prior to his elevation, he was an Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIG).

He is understood to have about two months left before reaching retirement age.

The Police Council meeting was attended by Vice President Kashim Shettima; Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume; National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu; Minister of Police Affairs, Ibrahim Gaidam; Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike; several state governors; and other statutory members.

Chaired by the president, the Nigeria Police Council comprises the 36 state governors, the Chairman of the Police Service Commission, and the Inspector-General of Police.

Established under the Police Act 2020, the Council plays an advisory and oversight role on police policy, administration, budgeting, and senior appointments.

Disu’s swearing-in comes amid heightened public concern over security nationwide, placing immediate expectations on the new police chief to consolidate reforms and strengthen operational effectiveness within the Force.
