•Major David Chasia, Igbobi Corps Officer, The Salvation Army, Nigeria Territory

The Salvation Army, the largest denomination known internationally for its humanitarian services, is soliciting for funds to reach out to needy persons and the less privileged across the Globe.

Major David Chasia, Corps Officer of the Igbobi, Lagos branch of the organisation widely acclaimed as the most trusted charity in the world, speaks with The Frontier on what the Self Denial Appeal is all about.

Excerpts:

We understand your Movement is soliciting for funds referred to as Self Denial Appeal? What exactly is this Self Denial?

Self denial is a personal self sacrifice, denying yourself to give sacrificially so that you offer God’s love to a hurting world. Giving our lives to those desperately in need of it. A foundation of godliness.

•School for the disabled

Is it only Igbobi Corps which you are in charge of that is soliciting for the funds?

No. This is a worldwide appeal. The self denial appeal started in 1886 by the founder William Booth, and it’s now active in more than 130 Countries.

•Provision of clean water for communities

What is the money realised from Self Denial meant for?

It is channeled to an international fund whose aim is to support missionary and missions around the world, show mercy to the needy and for community development.

•Food items for the hungry

How often is Self Denial Appeal done?

Self denial is an annual appeal.

Can you pinpoint particular beneficiaries of the money raised from past Self Denial exercise?

The Salvation Army opened fire in Ethiopia and South Sudan two years ago.

Community development projects such as:

– Building and rehabilitating education centers

– Sponsor education to the needy learners and people living with disabilities.

– Antihuman trafficking; sensitization, awareness and fight to stop it.

– Offering clean water for domestic use; plastic tanks for rain water harness

– Poverty eradication; after COVID-19, The Salvation Army through the self-denial fund revived small scale businesses to many across the globe especially in African countries.

– Response to calamities like flood, fire outbreaks, hungers, drought, disease outbreaks, hurricane etc

– Rehabilitation centers

– Hospitals and medication centers

– Adult learning centers

– etc.

•Portable water for communities

Is your organisation soliciting for Self Denial funds from members only?

It’s not from our members only, we are reaching out to the society and appeal to everyone to support us raise money and in turn use the same money prudently to extend a helping hand to the needy in the society and make Jesus Christ known to the world. Everybody is invited to support.

Do you have any particular amount of money you are looking at in your Corps?

We (Igbobi Corps) have been requested by the leadership to raise above N800,000. Last year we raised above N700,000 to the glory of God

If any Nigerian outside your organisation is willing to donate towards the Self Denial, how does one go about it?

We welcome everyone to use our Corps account details as:

THE SALVATION ARMY

IGBOBI CORPS

FIRST BANK

ACC NUMBER: 2005407567.

CORPS OFFICER’S TELEPHONE NUMBER: +2348068023463

What is the duration for this year’s Self Denial Appeal campaign?

From March to July 2024

•Provision of relief items during time of disaster and emergencies

Can you mention one unique thing that makes your organisation stand out from other religious denominations?

The Salvation Army community work is our strength, all powered through God’s love. To preach the gospel of Jesus Christ and to meet human needs in His name without discrimination in terms of race, creed, denomination or religion. The Salvation Army does not discriminate.
