American deportee nabbed over visa scam

The FrontierThe FrontierMarch 6, 2024 2601 Minutes read0

•NSCDC operatives

Men of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC, in Ondo State Command have arrested a middle aged deportee, Megbowon Olumide Taiwo, in Akure, the Ondo State capital, over an alleged visa scam.

The suspect was said to have duped unsuspecting number of people in Okitipupa, in Okitipupa local government area of the state, under the guise of facilitating their visa issuance to the United State of America (USA), reports Nigerian Tribune.

The suspect after duping the people ran away from Okitipupa and relocated to Akure, where he was arrested by NSCDC men after the incident was reported.

Speaking on the arrest of the suspect, the state NSCDC Commandant, Oluyemi Ibiloye, while parading the suspect, said Taiwo was arrested in Akure after he absconded from Okitipupa.

He stated that the suspect claimed to be a Captain in the United States Army and collected N300,000 from a female victim whom he promised a slot to work in America.

The NSCDC boss said “On February 20, a complaint of visa scam was reported against the suspect.

“He had told his victim when they met online on May 2, 2023, that he was a United States of America army officer on annual leave in Nigeria.

“The suspect promised the complainant a slot to work in America and asked her to deposit N300,000 into his bank account.

“After the money was paid into his bank account, he stopped picking up his victims’ telephone calls until he was tracked and arrested in Akure,”

The commandant disclosed that the suspect had made a confessional statement about the crime, saying he committed the offence as a result of overwhelming conditions.

While speaking, the suspect Taiwo said “I am not a captain in the U.S. Army. I obtained a Master’s degree in the U.S.A. before I was deported.

“I collected the said amount as I was planning to relocate to another country,”
