Self-service fuel station seeks to stop queues, under-dispensing in Nigeria

The FrontierThe FrontierAugust 7, 2026 612 Minutes read0

Managing Director of Sunbeth Energies Limited, Lateef Abioye, described the operation of Nigeria’s first self-service fuel station as a direct response to issues plaguing Nigeria’s downstream petroleum industry.

“This is about transparency, convenience, and empowering the customer. No more disputes, no more waiting on attendants. The customer controls what they buy,” he said at the launch of the fuel station.

The unveiling of the facility at its Ogba outlet in Lagos, he quoted in a statement yesterday, introduced a digital fueling experience that enables customers to initiate, monitor, and complete fuel purchases independently through a secure, user-friendly platform.

He added: ”Every customer deserves to know exactly what they are paying for, and this innovation gives them that confidence. What makes this achievement even more significant is that it is a Nigerian innovation. Working with Tech Brokers Limited, we have demonstrated that world-class technology can be conceived, designed, and deployed locally to solve real industry challenges. We are proud to be leading a transformation that will redefine how Nigerians purchase fuel.”

The Ogba deployment, he said, marks the beginning of a broader digital transformation strategy that will be extended across Sunbeth Energies’ retail network.

He said: “This is only the first step. We are committed to building intelligent, connected forecourts that combine digital payments, automation, data-driven insights, and superior customer experience. Our ambition is to set a new industry standard for how energy products are delivered in Nigeria.”

Speaking on the technology behind the innovation, Wasiu Popoola, Chief Executive Officer of Tech Brokers Limited, described the launch as the beginning of customer centric digital transformation in the Nigeria’s downstream oil and gas industry.

“Today marks the beginning of a new dawn for fuel retailing in Nigeria. This is more than a self-service solution; it is a robust indigenous technology platform developed to support the future of the downstream sector. The architecture is deliberately designed to accommodate virtually every payment rail and forecourt technology available today, while remaining flexible enough to integrate future innovations as the industry evolves.”

“We commend the management of Sunbeth Energies for their foresight, courage, and technological maturity in partnering with us to bring this groundbreaking solution to life. It takes visionary leadership to embrace transformative innovation, and Sunbeth has demonstrated exactly that. Together, we have shown that world-class technology can be conceived, designed, and delivered by Nigerian companies to solve Nigerian challenges.”

One of the first customers to use the new system described the experience as both reassuring and refreshingly simple.

He added: “I have never experienced anything like this at a fuel station in Nigeria. Being able to control the entire process myself and watch every litre being dispensed gave me complete confidence. It was easy to use, fast, and transparent.”
