Senator Ekweremadu’s wife released from UK prison, jubilation rocks Enugu community

•Mrs Beatrice Ekweremadu

Mrs. Beatrice Ekweremadu, wife of a former Deputy Senate President, Senator Ike Ekweremadu, has been released from the United Kingdom’s prison.

A source who craved anonymity told our correspondent that Beatrice, who was sentenced to five years in UK prison, returned to the country yesterday, reports The PUNCH.

She is said to be currently in Abuja.

Our correspondent, however, gathered that there is jubilation currently going on in her family house in the Mpu community of Aninri Local Government Area of Enugu State.

Beatrice, her husband and one Obinna Obeta were jailed for the organ-trafficking plot, with different jail terms in 2023 by the United Kingdom court.

Speaking with our correspondent during the community-wide celebration, the President of Mpu Town Union Federated, Mr Benjamin Chijioke, described her return as a huge relief to the entire community.

Chijioke, however, prayed to God to intervene in the case of Ekweremadu, their son so that he would also return home like his wife in good health.

He said, “Our joy as Mpu people knows no bounds. It is a great day for us. Since morning, it has been jubilation and celebration in all the villages.

“People are shedding tears of joy especially those that were depending on the philanthropic disposition of the family to survive. Today is our Orie market day, the whole market was agog with celebration.

“We thank God and also pray that God will intervene so that our illustrious aeon and leader, Distinguished Senator Ike Ekweremadu will join his family soonest. I don’t know what to say again because their absence has brought a huge setback to the community. We missed them a lot but we thank God for everything.”

Also speaking, the councillor Mpu Ward, Ogbuka Edwin, thanked God for her return, adding that Ekweremadu and wife’s absence had created a big gap in the community.

Edwin said, “Today is like a public holiday in Mpu Community. The news was a cheerful one. The absence of Senator Ike Ekweremadu and his wife created a big gap in the community.

“We are not going to relent in our prayers until our hero and leader joins his family and we are trusting what God can do. It is celebration galore.”
