Supreme Court fixes date to deliver judgment on Kano guber election

The FrontierThe FrontierJanuary 11, 2024 3201 Minutes read0

The Supreme Court has fixed Friday, January 12, for judgment in an appeal filed by the Kano State governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf challenging the ruling of the Court of Appeal.

This is contained in a notice issued by the apex court to all the parties in the suit yesterday, reports The Nation.

According to the notice, the court directed that each party should not have more than two lawyers in attendance.

Appeal court had affirmed the verdict of the tribunal that sacked Governor Abba Yusuf and declared the candidate of the APC, Dr Nasiru Gawuna, as the authentic winner.

Supporters of the NNPP have continued to fault the Appeal Court ruling, especially the controversy surrounding the claim that two different judgments were delivered, which were against and also in favour of the incumbent governor.

On the contrary, the APC supporters continued to hail the two judgments which favoured their candidate.

The anxiety in the state had compelled the Kano State Police Commissioner, Gumel, to ban all protests or rallies and forced the leadership of both parties to sign a peace accord, even though this has not yielded much result as there were incidents of violence.

Also, the secretary of the legal team for the NNPP, Barrister Bashir Tudun Wuzirci, confirmed that the apex court had fixed tomorrow for the ruling.

“Yes, it is officially confirmed. They have told us to appear on Friday for the judgment.

“They told us that each party should not have more than two counsels in attendance.

“This, they said, is because they will be delivering seven judgments on that same Friday,” he said.

In late December last year, a five-member panel of the Supreme Court led by Justice John Inyang Okoro had listened to arguments by the parties concerned and reserved judgment on the case.
