Supreme Court ruling boosts PDP’s power to sack Anyanwu, suspend Wike — Opposition coalition

The spokesperson for the Opposition Coalition, Ikenga Imo Ugochinyere, has declared that the recent Supreme Court judgment regarding the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) National Secretary, Senator Samuel Anyanwu, has given the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) the authority to remove him without the possibility of legal reversal.

In a statement issued today, Ugochinyere stressed that all court actions initiated by Anyanwu, including new interim orders, have become null and void following the Supreme Court’s ruling that internal party matters are not justiciable.

“The Supreme Court judgment on the issue of the PDP Secretary is a powerful weapon to help sack Anyanwu afresh, suspend Wike, and rebuild the party,” he stated.

According to Ugochinyere, the ruling serves as a window of opportunity to rescue the PDP and end what he described as “years of sabotage” orchestrated by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, and Anyanwu, reports The Guardian.

“The Supreme Court has held that political parties have the right to determine their leadership without recourse to the courts. With this judgment, the PDP NWC, which has 18 officers—of whom 14 solidly support rescuing the party—can now immediately convene a meeting and invoke their powers to act on behalf of the National Executive Committee (NEC) and National Convention,” he said.

He further urged the NWC to swiftly suspend Anyanwu afresh and appoint an acting National Secretary, stressing that the Supreme Court ruling makes such a decision irreversible.

“The fresh removal of Anyanwu will be irreversible even if he goes to court since the court has ruled that the removal of party officers is an internal affair,” Ugochinyere added.

He also called on the NWC to adopt the Ikimi Disciplinary Committee report, which had earlier recommended Anyanwu’s suspension.

“So, to party members, there is no cause for alarm as this judgment cannot reinstate Anyanwu as Secretary. Instead, it serves as a tool to end the disorder within the party,” he said.

Ugochinyere commended PDP NWC members who have resisted alleged attempts to compromise them and urged them to use their majority strength to suspend or expel both Anyanwu and Wike.

“I commend the NWC members who have refused to be bought or compromised with Abuja land deals. They must remain strong and immediately use their majority to suspend and expel Anyanwu and his political godfather, Wike, to end the crisis that has weakened the PDP and the opposition,” he concluded.
