Swiss authorities have launched an investigation into the death of a Nigerian man, Michael Ekemezie, who died in police custody in Lausanne after allegedly being pinned face-down by officers during a routine stop.
Ekemezie, 39, originally from Mgbakwu in Anambra State, Nigeria, reportedly collapsed and died less than an hour after being taken into custody on May 25, reports The Guardian.
A viral video circulating on social media shows him crying out in pain as an officer restrained him.
His family, represented by Nigerian lawyer Ifeanyi Ejiofor, submitted a petition to the Embassy of Switzerland in Nigeria on May 30, demanding a transparent investigation. The petition was also copied to the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM).
In an official response dated June 4, the Chargé d’Affaires of the Swiss Embassy, Siamak Rouhani, confirmed that a cantonal prosecutor had initiated a formal investigation into the incident. However, he explained that due to Switzerland’s data protection laws and the principle of separation of powers, further details could not yet be released.
“The Embassy would like to inform you that the competent prosecutor’s office has launched an investigation into the death of a person of African origin on May 25, 2025, at a police station in Lausanne, Switzerland. The results of this investigation are pending. In accordance with the principle of separation of powers and the protection of personal data, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs does not hold any information concerning ongoing cantonal proceedings and cannot interfere in them,” the embassy stated.
While acknowledging receipt of the embassy’s response, Ekemezie’s family criticised the lack of transparency and the silence from both Swiss and Nigerian authorities.
“Justice must not be shielded behind bureaucratic procedures. It must not be delayed. And it must never be denied. We urge the Swiss government and all relevant authorities to fully cooperate with the Nigerian government and the legal representatives of Mr. Ekemezie’s family. Every diplomatic and legal channel must be pursued. The truth must be uncovered. Accountability must be served,” the family said in a statement.
The family also lamented that no Nigerian government official had reached out to them since the incident. They insist that Ekemezie’s death, under suspicious circumstances in a country that prides itself on human rights, must be thoroughly investigated.
