With climate change predisposing the environment to altering rainfall patterns, rising temperatures and other extreme weather situations, experts have suggested actions that help.
The experts who spoke during a climate change and child’s right engagement in Adamawa State, advocated preventive investment against flooding and other climate change aggravated occurrences than waiting until a need arises for hasty curative measures, reports The Nation.
In the engagement coordinated in Yola by the Adamawa State Government with support from UNICEF and the ASWA III Project as funded by the Government of the Netherlands, the experts urged authorities to think always of the children and women who are usually worst affected by disasters that often result in household displacement.
In his presentation, Professor Abel Adebayo of the Modibbo Adama University, Yola, said climate change in certain instances is causing unusually heavy rains and devastating floods, and in other instances contrastingly peculiar spells of low rains and resultant drought, which are causing decline in agricultural production, among other things.
“The consequences of declining agricultural production go far beyond farmers’ incomes, particularly in households where children depend on crops such as beans and groundnuts as important sources of food and protein,” he warned.
