Tension has continued to mount in Anambra State, following the killing of no fewer than nine security men by suspected gunmen.
The incident happened at Oba, Idemili South Local Government Area of Anambra State on the midnight of yesterday.
According to a source who spoke with our correspondent on account of anonymity, the hoodlums were many in two hilux vehicles when they invaded the club house, reports The Nation.
The source further said their aim was to pick the owner of the club house, which the Vigilance security men attached to the place resisted.
The source said: “And in anger, the gunmen opened fire on the security operatives and killed all of them including one police man, and left.
“Before they left, they beheaded one of their victims and cut off the leg of another.”
Confirming the report, Anambra State police public relations officer, Ikenga Tochukwu, said the assailants would not go unpunished, adding that the command was on their trail.
However, he said those killed were the operatives of local vigilante in Oba in a nightclub, describing it as unfortunate
Ikenga said: “Yes, the incident happened. Our men were alerted and they quickly moved to the scene of the incident, but the gunmen had already fled.
“Our men have recovered the bodies of the vigilante operatives who were fatally wounded, while others sustained various degrees of injury.
“We have also fully deployed our men to Oba, and operation is ongoing. So far, no arrest has been made,” he said.
The Nightclub’s attack by gunmen was not the first in the community as one of the popular native doctors in the area (names withheld) had months back been kidnapped by gunmen in his hotel.
Though he was later released after some days, it was gathered that a big ransom was paid to the hoodlums.
