Terrorists kill 6, plant bomb under corpses in Niger

Terrorists have attacked Wawa District of Borgu Local Council of Niger State.

It was reliably learnt that the attack occurred on Thursday, January 22, 2026, reports Sunday Guardian.

A traditional title holder, Baba Mohammed, the Zana of Wawa, hinted that the terrorists had earlier launched an attack on one of the National Park staff, an indigene of Wawa, who went to his farm alongside his children in the early hours of Thursday for farming activities. He was killed, and his motorcycle and mobile phone were taken away by the terrorists, who later called his people to notify them of the attack. The source stated that the children were set free by the terrorists.

According to Zana, “The terrorists used the deceased’s mobile phone to call his people, informing them of the attack.”

He pointed out that the youths in the community mobilised to enter the forest to search for his remains, but the elders cautioned them to remain calm and not embark on such a mission.

“However, they didn’t yield to the advice and went into the forest. Unfortunately, all six were killed,” Zana noted.

He further explained that the six killed had their age range between 26,27 and 28, adding that none of them were married.

He said, “The six dead bodies were recovered, but up to this moment that I am speaking with you, we have yet to recover the body of a staff member of the National Park.”

Mohammad revealed that a mass burial was conducted for the six persons, stressing that the search for the remains of the staff of the National Park is continuing.

Zana stated that the burial was attended by the Emir of Borgu, the Commissioner for Youth Development, Niger State, the Chairman, Borgu Local Council, as well as prominent personalities from the area.

He, however, appealed to the Federal and Niger State governments to, as a matter of urgency, come to their aid by providing sufficient security personnel to the area in order to protect the lives of the people.

Zana added, “Soldiers, National Park staff and Vigilantes who went into the forest were lucky; they might have been killed because the terrorists had planted bombs under each of the six dead bodies, but God saved their lives because they had a bomb expert among them who detonated all the bombs.”
