•Nollywood actresses

Nollywood’s 2025 was a landmark year, with women at the forefront of a cinematic revolution. These trailblazing filmmakers shattered conventions, tackling themes of power, love, ambition, and identity, and audiences responded in droves.

The year’s most impactful stories were crafted by women who refused to be confined to traditional roles, reports The Nation.

They dominated cinemas and YouTube, sparked debates on streaming platforms, and redefined Nollywood’s cultural landscape.

These women didn’t just make films, they set agendas, pushed boundaries, and proved that women can also be the driving force behind Nollywood’s creative and commercial success.

From record-breaking cinema runs to viral streaming moments, here are nine female filmmakers who defined 2025.

1. Funke Akindele: The Unstoppable Force

Funke Akindele’s dominance in Nollywood is undeniable. With a career spanning over two decades, she has consistently delivered films that resonate with audiences. Her 2024 release, “Everybody Loves Jenifa” and 2025’s “Behind the Scenes”, have grossed over N1 billion and N700 million, respectively, solidifying her position as the industry’s most bankable filmmaker.

2. Kemi Adetiba: The Visionary

Kemi Adetiba’s bold visuals and political undertones have made her a household name. Her Netflix series, “To Kill a Monkey“, has become a talking point, showcasing her ability to weave complex narratives that appeal to local and international audiences.

3. Omoni Oboli: The Storyteller

Omoni Oboli’s films have made Nollywood more accessible to viewers worldwide. Her 2025 release, “Love in Every Word”, has amassed over 50 million views, sparking conversations about love, femininity, and wealth in modern Nigeria.

4. Toyin Abraham: The Prolific Filmmaker

Toyin Abraham’s evolution from actress to box-office powerhouse is remarkable. Her historical drama “Iyalode” grossed over N300 million, while her directorial debut, “Oversabi Aunty”, cemented her status as a versatile filmmaker.

5. Biodun Stephen: The Intimate Storyteller

Biodun Stephen’s films explore family, love, and everyday Nigerian realities. Her 2025 release, “Labake Olododo”, grossed over N250 million, reaffirming her consistency as one of Nollywood’s most dependable filmmakers.

6. Bukunmi Adeaga-Ilori, Bisola Aiyeola, Wumi Toriola, and Bolaji Ogunmola:

In a groundbreaking move, four talented actresses – Bukunmi Adeaga-Ilori (KieKie), Bisola Aiyeola, Wumi Toriola, and Bolaji Ogunmola, came together to produce the action-comedy ‘Gingerrr’. Released in September 2025, the film exceeded expectations, grossing over N509 million and cementing its position as the fifth-highest-grossing Nollywood film of all time.
