Three people have been swept away in a heavy downpour in Zaria, Kaduna State.

An eyewitness, Mustapha Badamasi, Dan Bakano of Tudun jukun, said a corpse was recovered from the flood while at least two are missing, reports Daily Trust.

The corpse was identified as that of Yusuf Surajo known as Abba, while Fatima Sani Danmarke, and her 3-year old baby as well as that of a motorcyclist are yet to be recovered.

“The unfortunate incident occurred on the main Gaskiya road near a church in Tudun Jukun where water submerged the big drainage by the road side,” he said.

The eye witness narrated that a motorcyclist, shortly after the rain was carrying a woman and her 3-year old baby hit the edge of the road drainage and attempted to fall into it.

“The woman quickly jumped from the bike and while attempting to cross the drainage by foot she slipped and fell along with the baby on her back and were instantly swept away by the speeding water.

“Similarly, the motorcyclist was also flooded away by the water,” he said.

The eye witness further narrated that a good Samaritan who rushed to the scene dived into the water in an attempt to rescue the victims was also swept away.

Imam Mallam Musa Umar Al mishawi who led the funeral prayer of the recovered corpse at kwarin Dangoma said the deceased sustained an injury on his forehead.

“He is a resident of Gidan Dangoma in tudun jukun Zaria. And his remains have been laid to rest this morning in accordance with Islamic rite,” he noted.

Efforts to reach the Zaria Zonal Coordinator of State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) were not successful as his phone could not be reached as at the time of filing the report.
