Travellers trapped as bandits exchange gunfire with police on highway

•Police and bandits

Dozens of commuters were stuck on the Oshokoshoko–Obajana highway in Kogi State, today, following a combative exchange between security operatives and bandits.

Many parked their vehicles and fled as the gun battle lasted for hours, reports Daily Trust.

Tension erupted after terrorists launched another brazen attack on the increasingly dangerous corridor.

In a video on X, dozens of commuters were seen waiting by the roadside.

A distressed traveller, who filmed the scene, narrated the ordeal while pleading for urgent intervention.

The visibly shaken commuter continued calling for help, saying, “Nigeria, please come and save us here. We are in trouble. Everybody parked, nobody is moving. Kidnappers are taking over the road. Please, presently, we are here.”

The Oshokoshoko–Obajana axis has witnessed repeated ambushes in recent days, sparking fears among residents and regular travellers.

Kogi has been one of the worse hit in the ongoing security crisis affecting Nigeria.

Yesterday, bandits had broken into a church in Ejiba, Yagba West Local Government Area of the State, abducting the Pastor, his wife and some parishioners.

Last week, Governor Ahmed Ododo said bandits commanders had relocated to the state, but vowed that security operatives would take the battle to them.
