‘Tribal war’ in Lagos: APC chieftain vows to work against re-election of Igbo lawmaker

•Onuakaluasi and Ajomale

A member of the Lagos Governance Advisory Council (GAC), Henry Ajomale, has vowed to ensure that the Member of House of Representatives Oshodi-Isolo II, Lagos State, Okey-Joe Onuakaluasi, is unseated.

Onuakaluasi recently came under heavy backlash after he posted a list of those who benefitted from his empowerment scheme.

The lawmaker, a non-native of Lagos and non-Yoruba, empowered 29 people to go study nursing, cyber security, food processing and others in China and South Africa.

However, the names on the list showed that 24 out of the 29 beneficiaries are from Onuakaluasi’s Igbo ethnicity, while the remaining five are Yorubas with questionable names, reports The Guardian.

Displeased with Onuakaluasi’s actions towards the Oshodi-Isolo II Constituency, Ajomale lamented that people who came from distant states are depriving Yorubas of what belongs to them.

Addressing members of the constituency in Yoruba language, he said, “Whatever is required in this Isolo is what we will give, because some people can’t come from a long distance and steal our land from us… Yoruba land is more important to us. If they move irrationally, we will reduce them to size this time around.”

The Lagos GAC member stated that in-fighting in the All Progressives Congress (APC) led to the emergence of Onuakaluasi.

“We made a mistake before and our boss didn’t lend us countenance. We also had in-fighting. But right now, I don’t see any fight within us,” he said.

Ajomale stated that the party is united now and ready to field credible candidates, unlike before when a position was given “to an Igbo person to the point of becoming a House of Representatives member.”

“When a Yoruba man was there, we were getting some benefits. But in the case of this man, he took everything to Nnewi. This time around, we want our own child to be there, so we can benefit from what belongs to us. An Igbo man mustn’t come here to slap our faces. This time around, things will be different,” he added.
