UK Prime Minister Sunak to resign as Conservative Party leader

The Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Rishi Sunak, is set to resign after crushing election defeat.

Sunak said, “I have heard your anger,” he says in his final statement outside Downing Street, adding that he will step down once a new party leader is found,” reports BBC.

Keir Starmer will become the new prime minister after he meets the King this morning.

Labour has won the UK general election in a landslide, ending 14 years of Conservative government

High-profile Conservative casualties include former Prime Minister Liz Truss.

Elsewhere, the Lib Dems make huge gains, while the SNP lose dozens of seats

Finally, Rishi Sunak described the UK as the best country in the world.

He promptly gets in a car to drive away from Downing Street.

Sunak says one of the most remarkable things about the UK is “how unremarkable it is”.

He goes on to mention how he became prime minister within two generations of his grandparents arriving in the UK.

Sunak goes on to thank his colleagues and expresses gratitude to his wife and daughters.

He said he could never thank them enough for the sacrifices they have made to allow him to serve the country.
