What you need to know about stage-four cancer and chances of survival

The FrontierThe FrontierAugust 18, 2026 83 Minutes read0

Cancer is a disease in which abnormal cells grow uncontrollably; the more a cancer grows, the more harmful it becomes.

There are four stages of cancer from 1 to 4, and the higher the number, the larger the cancer and the more it has spread, reports The Nation.

Stage 1/I: Usually an early cancer that is small and has not spread from the organ it started in.

Stage 2/II: A cancer that is larger, but still contained within the organ it started in. It may have started to spread into lymph nodes.

Stage 3/III: A larger cancer again, and it may have also started to spread into surrounding tissues, with cancer cells in nearby lymph nodes.

Stage 4/IV: A cancer that has spread from where it started to another organ in the body, this is also referred to as metastatic or secondary cancer.

Stage 4 cancer is very serious, but it is not the harbinger of death it once was.

While any cancer diagnosis is devastating, this term “stage 4” seems to have its own terrible weight.

Survival rates for stage 4 cancer depend on the type of cancer, its grade, how well the cancer responds to treatment, your age, and your overall health.

This stage may be diagnosed years after the initial cancer diagnosis and/or after the primary cancer has been treated or removed.

Cancer stages are determined by using physical exams, imaging scans, and other tests that can offer information about a cancer’s status.

A cancer’s stage can also help a medical team decide on a course of treatment and determine how successful a certain treatment might be.

The bones, liver, and lungs are especially common places for cancer to spread.

Cancer also frequently spreads to lymph nodes, collections of immune cells scattered throughout the body. Because of this spread, stage 4 cancer requires more aggressive treatment than cancer at lower stages.

At stage 4, treatment options depend on the type and location of the cancer, a person’s overall health, and the cancer’s overall response to treatment. Typically, the goal of stage 4 treatment is to:

– Slow or stop new growth of cancer cells

– Reduce or relieve a person’s symptoms

– Minimize complications

– Improve quality of life

The treatment and outlook for people with stage 4 cancer depend on the specific type of cancer being treated.

In general, the goals of stage 4 cancer treatment are to stop or slow the cancer’s spread, manage cancer symptoms or complications, and improve a person’s quality of life.

Treatment Options

There are several treatment options available for stage 4 cancer. These methods can either be used individually or as combined treatments, depending on the nature of the cancer.

Chemotherapy: Chemotherapy is often the only choice for someone with advanced stage cancer. The dose and frequency can be adjusted according to the potential risks, side effects, and individual preferences.

Radiation therapy: Radiation therapy is often used in combination with surgery or chemotherapy and may help shrink tumors and ease symptoms.

Surgery: Surgery isn’t often used in stage 4 cancer unless the tumor sites are small and the surgery might help relieve symptoms and prevent further spread.

Immunotherapy: Immunotherapy can help your immune system fight cancer and is used more in advanced stage cancers. There are different immunotherapy treatments and success rates for different cancer types.

Targeted therapy: Targeted therapyTrusted Source is precision medication that targets certain cancer proteins and affects their growth. It can treat many different types of cancer and may be used in combination with other treatments.

Hormone therapy: Hormone therapy can be used in cancers that rely on hormones in order to grow, such as breast and prostate cancers. When used with other treatments, it may reduce a tumor’s size, lower the risk of recurrence, or even destroy cancer cells.

In general, the most intensive treatments will be given first to maximize early disease control. Such treatments may be considered unsafe, however, for patients who are sicker before the start of systemic therapy; aggressive chemotherapy may not be suitable for older or frailer patients if there is a chance that treatment side effects might make them even sicker.

For such patients, gentler treatment options with fewer toxic agents may be chosen, and lengthy infusions of anti-cancer medicine may be substituted for pill-form medications, which can be taken at home.
