5 best countries for women travelling alone in 2026

The FrontierThe FrontierMarch 31, 2026 1012 Minutes read0

• A lady travelling alone

Travelling alone as a woman comes with its own set of challenges, but some countries stand out for their safety, inclusion and welcoming environments.

The Georgetown University Women, Peace and Security (WPS) Index, which assesses women’s inclusion, justice, and security, and the Global Peace Index provide helpful information, even though there isn’t a single worldwide ranking for lone female travellers.

Based on these sources and real experiences, here are five countries that make top destinations for women travelling solo in 2026.

Costa Rica

Costa Rica is routinely listed among the happiest nations in the world and has risen from 60th to 34th on the WPS Index, demonstrating gains in women’s security and inclusion. The Nicoya Peninsula, which includes Santa Teresa and Nosara, has a relaxed beach lifestyle with a diverse population of foreigners, surfers, and business owners. Building relationships can also be facilitated by staying in sociable guesthouses or boutique hotels as opposed to solitary rentals.

Estonia

Estonia is ranked 24th on the Global Peace Index because of low crime and political stability, and it is ranked 11th on the WPS Index, its highest place ever, with excellent results in women’s health, financial inclusion, and community safety. Women may easily explore Tallinn’s UNESCO-listed Old Town on their own because it is small, walkable, and rich in art, history, and cafes.

Vietnam

Vietnam, which is placed 38th on the Global Peace Index, performs well on the WPS Index when it comes to women’s perceptions of community safety, especially in Southeast Asia. The nation is inviting to lone travellers, with amiable residents and lots of social chances through small-group tours and street food culture. Slower, more intimate travel is made possible by staying in homestays and interacting with local guides.

Uruguay

Uruguay is the second most peaceful nation in South America, after Argentina, and has moved up from 59th to 35th on the WPS Index, doing well on security and justice metrics. Travellers observe the nation’s laid-back atmosphere, amiable residents, and secure cities. Highlights include visiting the relaxed coastal village of Punta del Diablo, taking in sunsets at Calle de los Suspiros, and touring the Barrio Histüge in Colonia del Sacramento.

Norway

Because of its robust welfare provisions, equitable pay, and high level of community safety, Norway consistently scores near the top of the Global Peace Index and is tied with Sweden for third place on the WPS Index. Norway provides breathtaking natural scenery and a society that places a high value on safety for women travelling alone. It is strongly suggested to take an expedition cruise in Svalbard, see Bodø and the Lofoten Islands, and take pictures of the northern lights.
