Lagos to host public presentation of renowned academic Prof. Lamikanra’s new books

The FrontierThe FrontierAugust 10, 2026 603 Minutes read0

The Commonwealth Institute of Advanced and Professional Studies (CIAPS) will, on Tuesday, August 11, host the public presentation of two new books by renowned academic, scientist and columnist Professor Adebayo Lamikanra, in what is expected to be a major gathering of Nigeria’s intellectual and professional community.

The Frontier reports that the event, hosted in collaboration with Read Nigeria Group, is scheduled to take place at the CIAPS Auditorium in Lagos and is expected to attract academics, policymakers, scientists, business leaders, public intellectuals, writers and other distinguished guests for an afternoon celebrating scholarship, ideas and public discourse.

Professor Lamikanra, a retired Professor of Pharmacy at Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, is widely respected for his contributions to pharmaceutical education and research. Beyond academia, he has established himself as one of Nigeria’s most thoughtful public commentators through his weekly newspaper column, “Reflection”, in which he examines issues of national and global importance with analytical depth and clarity.

The public presentation will formally launch two of his latest publications: ‘The Rise and Rise of Capitalism’ and ‘Talking Point’.

The Rise and Rise of Capitalism is a collection of essays that explores the origins, evolution and enduring influence of capitalism. The book traces the historical development of one of the world’s most consequential economic systems and examines its impact on societies, institutions, politics and global development.

Drawing on history, economics and public affairs, the essays invite readers to reflect on the forces that continue to shape modern economies and the future of capitalism in an increasingly interconnected world.

The second book, Talking Point, brings together a carefully selected collection of Lamikanra’s essays, written over the years as a columnist for The Guardian.

Taking its title from one of his regular newspaper features, the volume addresses a broad spectrum of issues, including governance, science, education, public policy and national development.

The essays reflect the author’s distinctive ability to combine scholarly rigour with accessible prose, making complex issues understandable to a broad readership.

Organisers describe the event as more than a conventional book launch, saying it will provide a platform for discussions on ideas, scholarship and the role of intellectual engagement in national development.

The gathering is expected to include reviews of both books, goodwill messages and opportunities for interaction between the author and guests.

Professor Lamikanra has long been recognised as a scholar whose influence extends beyond the laboratory and the lecture theatre. His writings have consistently bridged science, public policy and civic engagement, earning him respect among academics and general readers alike.

His weekly columns are known for their informed commentary, measured analysis and thoughtful reflections on contemporary issues.

The choice of CIAPS as the venue underscores the institute’s commitment to advancing scholarship, public dialogue and lifelong learning. Over the years, the institute has hosted numerous book presentations, lectures and intellectual forums to stimulate debate and encourage the exchange of ideas among scholars, professionals and public leaders.

With The Rise and Rise of Capitalism and Talking Point, Professor Lamikanra adds to an already distinguished body of work spanning science, literature and public affairs. The unveiling is expected to offer readers not only the chance to engage with the books themselves but also to interact with an author whose career has been defined by a commitment to knowledge, critical inquiry and public service.

The event is open to invited guests and members of the public with an interest in books, ideas and contemporary issues. It is expected to be one of the notable literary and intellectual gatherings in Lagos this month.

Interested attendees can visit the CIAPS website to register and find more details.
