Hardship: Lagos records long BRT queues after transport fare cut

The FrontierThe FrontierFebruary 27, 2024 4901 Minutes read0

•Passengers on queue at Barracks Bus Stop, Ojuelegba in Lagos to enter Lagbus.

Long queues yesterday characterised many termi-nuses of the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) of the Lagos State Government following the slashing of BRT fares to ameliorate the suffering of residents.

Gov Babajide Sanwo-Olu had on Thursday an-nounced a 25 per cent rebate on fares charged by BRT and other Lagos State Government-owned transport schemes, reports NAN.

The governor disclosed this during a live media chat to intimate residents of steps being taken by his ad-ministration to reduce the economic hardship on them.

A civil servant, Mrs Vivian Mgbemena, expressed delight that the fare which was N600 from Ayobo to Oshodi, was slashed to N450.

She said, “When I got to the bus stop, the queue was very long, and because time was against me, I had to stand. I waited for about 30 minutes before I was able to board a bus and stood throughout the trip.”

Miss Ngozi Ejiofor, who travelled from Okoko-maiko to Mile 2 using BRT, however, noted that, “The fare is still high; the government should help us to reduce it further. It should also look into the number of buses plying our route.”

A businessman, Mr Kunle Olowopoju, praised the state government for the fare cut, describing it as a huge relief.

Olowopoju, who queued at the Costain Bus Stop of BRT, said that the transport fare from Costain to Ikorodu was reduced from N700 to N600.
