Nigerians have lost confidence in judicial system – NBA chairman

The FrontierThe FrontierDecember 1, 2023 4152 Minutes read0

Chairman of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Plateau State chapter, Izang Aware, has said that Nigerians have lost confidence in the legal system in the country.

He said that there’s therefore the need for introspection by legal practitioners to make the profession responsive to the yearnings and aspirations of the common man as their last hope, reports Daily Sun.

Speaking at a press briefing in Jon yesterday as part of activities making the 2023 Law Week, Aware said that it’s in realisation of this objective that the theme of the Law Week is “Law and Policy: A Chequered Odyssey”

According to him, “The Nigerian Bar Association, Jos Branch, in carrying out one of its aims and objectives, set up the 2023 Law Week Committee chaired by Niri Darong, Esq. “Law and Policy: A Chequered Odyssey”.

“This theme stems from the fact that many Nigerians are not satisfied with our laws which has led to an interrogation of this problem.

“While there are a lot of activities marking the Law Week which is a period when Legal Practitioners come together and evaluate their work in previous year and set new agenda for the future of the profession, the content of the program includes watershed of functional learning that earned the practitioner minimum credit units to continue and remain relevant in the practice of the law whether in employed position or in private practice.

“It is also a period to engage with relevant constituted authorities involve in the administration of justice by building virile partnership for national development through observance of the rule of law. It also affords opportunity for colleagues to interact without the usual Courtroom arguments.

“It encourages and fosters deepening relationships that results in synergy in some areas of practice. It affords the practitioner the time to unwind from strict formalities by socializing such as dancing and playing some sports or games.

“It helps the younger practitioners to meet the very old practitioners that they admire in Court and are looking forward to becoming like them. This Law Week is no exception. It is loaded in content to add to our knowledge, stocktaking, evaluation, setting new agenda and capping it with the traditional law dinner.

“The theme for this year’s Law Week resonates with the contemporary times. As legal practitioners, the jurisprudential definition of law is inherent as a result of the training of the lawyer. Policy on the other hand is principally in the realm of public administration. Nevertheless, it is a concept that is also relevant in private business.

“In simplistic terms, policy is seen as a plan of what to do in particular situations that has been agreed to officially by a group of people, a business organization, a government, or a political party.

He said that the key note speaker will a university don, Prof. Chris Kwaja while the Chairman of the Law Week is Major General Nuhu Angbazo (rtd.)
